How to Keep Flowers Fresh Longer: A Florist's Insider Tips

There's nothing quite like receiving a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers — and nothing more disappointing than watching them wilt too soon. As your local florists in Alpharetta, we've picked up a few tricks over the years that make a real difference. Here's how to get the most out of every arrangement.

1. Trim the Stems at an Angle

Before placing your flowers in water, cut about an inch off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle. This increases the surface area for water absorption and prevents stems from sitting flat on the bottom of the vase, which can block water uptake. Use sharp scissors or a clean knife — never tear.

2. Use Clean, Room-Temperature Water

Bacteria are the enemy of fresh flowers. Always start with a clean vase and fresh water. Room-temperature water is generally best for most flowers, though bulb flowers like tulips prefer cool water. Change the water every two days and re-trim the stems each time.

3. Use the Flower Food Packet

That little packet that comes with your arrangement isn't just filler — it contains a mix of sugar (food for the flowers), acidifier (to help water travel up the stem), and biocide (to kill bacteria). Use it! If you run out, a teaspoon of sugar and a few drops of bleach in a quart of water works as a DIY substitute.

4. Keep Flowers Away from Heat and Direct Sunlight

Flowers last longest in cool environments. Avoid placing arrangements near sunny windows, heating vents, appliances, or ripening fruit (which releases ethylene gas that speeds up wilting). A cool room or even a brief stint in the refrigerator overnight can significantly extend their life.

5. Remove Wilting Flowers Promptly

One wilting bloom can release gases that accelerate the decline of the others. Remove any flowers that are past their prime as soon as you notice them — your arrangement will look better and the remaining blooms will last longer.

6. Mist Delicate Petals

Some flowers, like hydrangeas and gardenias, can absorb water through their petals. A light misting with a spray bottle once a day can help keep them looking fresh and vibrant.
